CARLA RIPLEY

Carnosine Gel

I wasn't trying to look younger.
I was trying to hurt less.

New here? My full story lives over on my Story page, twenty years as a cosmetic dermal therapist, the health journey that changed everything, and the path that followed. This page is about one small discovery along the way that genuinely surprised me.

It started with a total clickbait moment. I was scrolling social media when a friend's post stopped me in my tracks. It wasn't a beauty product. It wasn't being sold for anti-ageing. It was a sports performance and recovery gel made for professional athletes. Normally I'd have kept scrolling, but one ingredient jumped out at me:

CARNOSINE.

The reason it caught my eye is that I'd never heard of it. Carnosine is a peptide, and peptides are not new in the dermal therapy world. I thought I knew the ones that mattered for skin. But this one was new to me, and that was enough to make my dermal therapist brain go, hang on a minute.

So I did what I always do. I went down the research rabbit hole, and the deeper I dug, the more fascinated I became. I'm not here to make any claims about it. I'd simply encourage you to look into carnosine yourself, the way I did, and see what you find.

Eventually curiosity got the better of me, and I added it to cart. Not because I was chasing better skin, but because I was genuinely curious about the ingredient itself and what it might do for me. When it arrived, I became my own guinea pig again.

And here's the part that surprised me. It worked for me. I felt a difference. And then I started to see a difference in my skin too, more hydrated, more plump, more fresh, which is ironic, because that's the part I wasn't even looking for.

What grabbed me wasn't the marketing. It was the science. After decades in the skin industry, it gave me flashbacks to the early collagen supplement days, back when people thought collagen drinks sounded ridiculous, right before the industry caught up and they went mainstream. I have a feeling carnosine is heading the same way. And I'll tell you this: it's rare these days that an ingredient genuinely grabs my attention. This one did.

There are two versions

One small but important thing to know before you use it: Carnosine Gel comes in two versions, and they suit different people and different uses.

Without menthol

The one I use on my face and body

The non-menthol version is fragrance-free, with no cooling sensation. This is the one I reach for as part of my daily skincare routine, applied like a facial serum, and over my whole body using the saturation protocol. I do it every day now without fail, straight after my shower, and it's simply part of my morning. Gentle, simple, and easy to include in the routine you already have. It's the version behind the before-and-after photos further down this page.

With menthol

For my fitness friends

The menthol version contains the same carnosine and magnesium, alongside menthol, giving it that cooling sensation, and it may provide temporary relief of minor muscle aches and soreness. There's no added fragrance, what you smell is simply the menthol. Made for before, during, or after activity.

What's in it

I'll always give you the facts on what's inside and let you make your own informed choice. Below is every ingredient in the non-menthol version. Tap any one of them to read, in plain language, what it is and why I'm personally comfortable using it.

The menthol version is the same carnosine and magnesium base, in the same patented delivery system, with menthol added.

Listed in true label order, by amount. The two highlighted above, carnosine and magnesium, are the ingredients doing the work I was curious about.

My day one, bare-faced and all

The very first day my first tube arrived, something in me said: "Carla! Take a before photo!". Old habits from my Clinic days. You only ever get one chance at a "before photo". I took it before my shower, then applied the gel and my usual moisturiser over the top, and took the after straight away.

Before and after, front Before and after, three-quarter Before and after, side

I could see a distinct change. Afterwards my skin felt firmer, plumper and fresher to me. What you can't see in the photos is how good it felt.

In full disclosure: I never intended to share these photos. The lighting is slightly different between the two, and of course I'm in a dressing gown in the before and dressed in the after. I'm sharing them anyway, exactly as they were taken.

I haven't put together a before-and-after like this since I had my Clinic's. For someone who spent two decades looking at skin for a living, and who isn't easily impressed, that should tell you something. This was simply my own experience on that first day. Everyone's skin is different, so your own results will vary, but I was impressed enough to share it.

Where do you fit in?

A few words for whoever you are. Find yourself below.

For you, one

If you live with chronic pain

If you live with chronic pain, you'll understand exactly why a recovery product caught my eye. And you'll know that I get it, because I've walked it too. This page is my own experience, not a promise of anyone else's, and your own results will vary. But if that's you, I'd love to hear from you.

Why not try it for yourself? What have you got to lose? My door is always open for a conversation too, you can reach me through my Story page.

For you, two

If you're an athlete or you train hard

This gel was made for you first. It's a sports performance and recovery product built for professional athletes, which is exactly what stopped me scrolling in the first place. The menthol version is the one to look at, made for before, during, or after activity, and it may provide temporary relief of minor muscle aches and soreness.

Have a read of the two versions above, then why not try it for yourself.

For you, three

If you support athletes for a living

Doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, remedial massage therapists, coaches, trainers, and the people behind professional sporting leagues, this one's worth your attention. If your work is helping bodies perform and recover, you may find this ingredient as interesting as I did. Practitioner material is on its way for exactly this reason.

If that's you, keep an eye on this space.

For you, four

If you came here for your skin

I didn't come to this looking for better skin, which is exactly why the difference I noticed surprised me so much. The non-menthol version is the one I use on my face, applied like a facial serum, and it's the one behind my before-and-after above. Everyone's skin is different, so your own results will vary. I'm simply sharing what I saw on my own face.

If carnosine for skin interests you the way it interested me, why not try it for yourself? What have you got to lose?

For you, five

If you're a fellow skin professional

If you're a dermal therapist, beauty therapist or clinic owner, you might find this ingredient as interesting as I did. I see real potential here for our industry, and I'm putting together something more detailed especially for practitioners. After two decades in clinic, I have a lot of thoughts on where this could sit in a treatment room.

If that's you, keep an eye on this space, the practitioner material is coming.

For you, six

If you have horses

There's a whole range made for horses too. Which makes sense, when you think about it. Horses might just be the hardest-working athletes there are. If you're in the equine world, as so many of the people in my life are, this one's worth knowing about.

Ask me about the equine range, I'm happy to point you the right way.

For you, seven

If you're looking for a side hustle

If you've read this far and you're someone who likes to share the things you genuinely love, there's an additional income stream here too. I'm a LactiGo affiliate, and it's been a simple way to share a product I actually use, alongside everything else I do. No clinic, no hands-on work, no big upfront anything.

If that sounds like something you'd like to explore, get in touch and I'll tell you how it works for me.
